What it's for
Fitting a new part to an old piece, trimming a door, easing an edge, cleaning up a joint that's been glued one too many times. This is small, careful work, so the tools are small too. A block plane does most of it, a shoulder plane trims the faces of tenons and rabbets, a paring chisel shaves to a line by hand pressure alone, and a spokeshave follows curves. A smoothing plane finishes the surfaces in between.
