Tool type
Thick chisels for chopping the square hole in a mortise-and-tenon joint, where the blade both cuts and levers out the waste. The English patterns you'll find are the registered mortise chisel, with steel hoops at both ends of the handle and a leather washer at the bolster, and the lighter London-pattern sash mortise chisel with an oval handle. Marples kept both in its catalogs for decades, and Robert Sorby still makes them. Their blades taper slightly in width toward the back so they don't jam in the cut. Witherby made socket mortise chisels, and both Witherby and Greenlee sold heavy socket framing chisels. Robert Sorby sharpens mortise chisels to a 30-degree main bevel.
