Stanley 92 Shoulder Plane - US
Stanley · No. 92 · 1902–1969
Stanley sold the No. 92 as a cabinetmaker's rabbet plane from 1902 to 1969, and designed the series to work as rabbet, chisel and shoulder planes. It's 5½ inches long with a ¾-inch iron, made 1 inch wide from 1962. The body is cast iron with full nickel plating and Hand-y grips milled into the sides, and the iron sits bevel up at roughly 20°, low enough to trim tenon shoulders. The toe section slides over the heel to set the mouth and comes off entirely, turning it into a chisel plane. It works in either hand. Stanley pitched the series against English makers like Norris, and Patrick Leach's view is that they're a good affordable choice, though no match for the English planes. Later ones may be English-made, and the iron is stamped with its country of origin.
Identify and date it
The No. 93 isn't a mirror version. It's a longer 6½-inch plane with a 1-inch iron, and the No. 90 is the 4-inch bullnose. The earliest No. 92s have no number cast in and a separately cast, pinned toe. From around WWI a recessed disc with the company logo sits in the toe, and that logo helps date the plane.
If you’ll use it
Leach found many weren't machined true, so check the sides against the sole with a small square when it arrives. It's an affordable alternative to an English shoulder plane, though he says it's no match for one.
If you’ll collect it
The amount of original nickel plating left has a big effect on value and none on use. A welded lever cap will put collectors off.
The long, thin lever cap snaps easily, and breaks are often welded and ground flat where you can't see them. Toe sections drift out of line with the heel, mouths get filed or chipped at the corners, and the casting can crack where the screw joining the two sections threads in.
Buying guide
Only about 10 No. 92s are listed, most asking $130–170 delivered, so this isn't much of a market read. Four of the ten ship from the UK with $27–49 of shipping, so a US-listed plane like the Sweetheart-titled one at about $108 delivered is the better buy. Ask whether the long, thin lever cap has ever been welded, and look for a photo sighting down the sole that shows the toe lined up with the heel and an even mouth with no filed or chipped corners. Leach found many weren't machined true, so check the sides against the sole with a small square when it arrives. Boxed planes ask $133–170 delivered, and collectors pay for original nickel plating, which does nothing for use.
