Stanley #60 1/2 Low Angle Black Block Plane 6" Made in USA, was my dads. I am 78
Stanley · No. 60½ · 1902–1982
Stanley No. 60½ Block Plane
This is the low-angle block plane most woodworkers picture. Stanley made it from 1902 to 1982, and Patrick Leach calls it a must-have, small enough to sit almost entirely in your hand. The iron is bedded at 12°, bevel up, which Stanley's catalog said made it easier to plane across the grain on hardwoods. The No. 60½ is the No. 60 with japanned trim in place of nickel plating, and both have the adjustable mouth Stanley added to the No. 60 around 1902. Depth is set by a knob on a threaded rod. There's no lateral lever, because there's no room for one under such a low iron. You'll find them in black and in blue paint, and Leach rates both as good workers, though he can't stand the maroon ones. The version you'll see most often, from the 1930s on, has a cross-hatched adjuster knob stamped STANLEY MADE IN USA.

Identify and date it
Reading a No. 60½ from the photos
The No. 60 is the nickel-plated twin, the No. 65½ is the 7-inch version, and the No. 61 never had an adjustable mouth. Early adjuster knobs are coarsely knurled cast iron with six holes or STANLEY cast in. The knob with cross-hatched knurling stamped STANLEY MADE IN USA dates from the 1930s on.
If you’ll use it
Black and blue ones both work well, so buy on condition. Leach says Stanley's block planes didn't decline when the bench planes did, so a blue one isn't a warning sign.
What to check
The casting is thin where the bed feathers down to the mouth, so heavy cuts and too much lever-cap pressure chip or crack it right behind the iron. Adjuster threads strip when people adjust with the cap locked down, early cast knobs snap off their rods, and the sliding mouth section often seizes.
- 01Bed: Zoom in on the photos of the bed right behind the iron. A small chip is fine, but cracks or a row of chips aren't.
- 02Sides: Look for hairline cracks running up from the mouth in the side photos. The sides should be clean.
- 03Adjuster: Look where the knob meets its threaded rod. There shouldn't be a crack or weld there.
- 04Mouth: Ask whether the front of the sole slides when the knob is loosened. It should move and close almost to the iron.
- 05Mouth lever: Check for the small lever behind the front knob. A bare hole there means it's missing.
Buying guide
Which one to buy
§ Oct 11, 2026A plain, complete 60½ is the buy, and a US-made one asks $40 delivered, well under the $65–100 most of the about 17 listed ask. A Fine User grade costs about $86 delivered, and a new-old-stock plane in its box asks about $94, less than the used boxed ones at $139–179. Black and blue ones both work well, so buy on condition. Zoom in on the bed right behind the iron for cracks or a row of chips, and ask whether the front of the sole slides when the knob is loosened. Skip the UK plane missing its adjuster wheel, which costs more delivered than the complete $40 one.
