Stanley · No. 65 · 1898–1969 (knuckle cap about 1917–1960)
Patrick Leach calls the No. 65 one of the finest planes Stanley ever made. It's the 7-inch member of the 12° low-angle family, with the same threaded-rod depth adjuster as the No. 60½ and nickel-plated trim. The knuckle-joint lever cap is what sets it apart. It's a two-piece steel cap with a palm rest that snaps down to lock the iron and lifts to release it, and Leach says that design is less likely to knock the iron out of line than a lever you rotate. Stanley didn't fit it at first, though. The No. 65 ran from 1898 to 1969, gained an adjustable mouth around 1905 and the knuckle cap around 1917, and went back to the plain stippled cap around 1960. So the knuckle-cap planes on eBay were mostly made between about 1917 and 1960.
Identify and date it
The No. 65½ is the same 7-inch low-angle plane with japanned trim and the plain lever cap. Later 65½ castings have the number stamped on the side, so a stamped 65½ wearing a knuckle cap is a hybrid. The No. 18 and No. 19 are the 20° block planes with knuckle caps.
If you’ll use it
Leach calls it a crowd pleaser in the user market and one of the finest planes Stanley made. Keep the set fine and it'll last, he says, because the bed is fragile.
Many have cracks at the far ends of the bed or chips along its leading edge right behind the iron, and Leach says the damage is often hard to see. It comes from a heavy set or too much clamping pressure on a casting that's thin where it feathers down to the mouth.
Buying guide
The knuckle cap is what sets the No. 65 apart, and Stanley fitted it from about 1917 to 1960, so buy one that shows it. Only about 9 are listed, most asking $100–130 delivered, and the two titled with the knuckle cap ask about $108, so this thin page isn't much of a market read. Most titles don't name the cap, so check the photos for the two-piece cap with its hinged palm rest. Leach says cracks at the bed ends and chips behind the iron are common and hard to see, so ask for close photos of both. Collectors should look at the Type 1 with a fixed mouth at about $134 delivered.
$56.52est. delivered
The lowest current price on a No. 65, with two bids and more than three days left. The title doesn't mention the knuckle cap, so check the photos, and stop around $80 bid, since a plain No. 65 is $93 delivered with Best Offer.
Vintage Stanley No. 65 Low Angle Adjustable Block Plane
$107.97est. delivered
One of only two listings titled with the knuckle cap, described as clean, at about $108 delivered, low in the $100–130 band. Ask for close photos of the bed ends and behind the iron, where Leach says cracks hide.
Stanley No. 65 KNUCKLE CAP Low Angle Block Plane. CLEAN! Number 65 Planer EXC+
$133.50est. delivered
Titled Type 1 with a non-adjustable mouth, which fits a plane made before the adjustable mouth came in around 1905. At about $134 delivered it sits just over the band, and it should have a one-piece sole and a plain cap, so check the photos for both.
