Stanley · No. 151
The No. 151 is the spokeshave Stanley pictured first in its 1937 catalog. It's the No. 51's body, 10 inches long with raised handles and a 2⅛-inch cutter, plus two adjusting screws that engage slots near the end of the cutter, so you can move it endwise and sideways in small steps. A cap iron and thumbscrew hold everything without a screwdriver. Stanley listed it by 1922 alongside the straight-handle No. 152, and later added the No. 151R with a rounded bottom and the No. 151M in malleable iron, which the catalog called practically unbreakable. The 151 doesn't have an adjustable mouth. That was the No. 53. What it gives you over the 51 is fine, even control of the cutter's depth and skew.
Identify and date it
Two knurled screws above the cutter mark a No. 151. The 151M is malleable iron and the 152 has straight handles. A spokeshave with a thumbscrew on the front of the body that opens the mouth is a No. 53 or 54, not a 151.
Cast-iron handles can break, which is why Stanley offered the malleable No. 151M. Look for cracked or brazed handles and for missing adjusting screws, cap iron or thumbscrew.
