Stanley · No. 98
This one surprises people who know the No. 98 as Stanley's little side rabbet plane. Stanley reused the number for an all-metal marking and mortise gauge, nickel plated, with two steel bars running through a machined, double-faced head. The bars carry roller cutters and adjustable pins, and Stanley's catalog said roller cutters work close into rabbets and corners and are best for marking across the grain and over knots. In the 1937 catalog the bars are 6½ inches long, graduated in sixteenths for 5 inches. Its siblings were the single-bar No. 90 and No. 97, the double-bar No. 91 with pins only and the No. 198 with a rosewood head. It's in the 1922, 1929 and 1937 catalogs, and a 1937 tool list names the No. 98 as its mortise gauge.
Identify and date it
The No. 98 side rabbet plane (1896–1942) shares the number, so read the listing. Among Stanley's metal gauges, two bars with roller cutters is a No. 98, two bars with pins only is a No. 91, and the same tool with a rosewood head is a No. 198. Catalog drawings show the number stamped at the end of a bar and STANLEY on the head.
Everything that marks is small and removable, so check for missing roller cutters and pins, missing thumbscrews and bent bars. Worn plating is cosmetic.
