Stanley · No. 65
The No. 65 was Stanley's better single-pin marking gauge, and the 1937 catalog put it on its list of primary tools for a home workshop. It's polished boxwood with a square head, a brass thumbscrew, a brass face plate set into the head to resist wear, an adjustable tempered point and a stop screw that keeps the head from sliding off. The oval bar is graduated in sixteenths for 6 inches, and a brass shoe protects the bar where the thumbscrew bears on it. Below it in the line sat the beech No. 61 and No. 62 with boxwood thumbscrews. Stanley also sold the No. 265, the same gauge without graduations for manual-training classes, and the No. 165 with a ribbed circular face plate for running a line around curves.
Identify and date it
A brass thumbscrew, a brass plate in the face of the head and a graduated boxwood bar point to a No. 65. Stanley's cheaper No. 61 and No. 62 are beech with boxwood thumbscrews, and the No. 64½ is beech with an oval head. An ungraduated boxwood gauge is a No. 265.
The small parts are what wear or go missing, the adjustable point, the stop screw and the brass face plate. A cracked head or a bar with worn-off graduations makes it a weaker buy.
Buying guide
Most of the about 11 No. 65 gauges listed ask $30–40 delivered, and a boxwood one titled with the Sweetheart logo is about $29, so there's no need to pay more. It's a thin page, but the asks are consistent. Check the photos for the steel point, the brass thumbscrew and the shoe under it, the inset brass face plate and the small stop screw, since the small parts are what go missing, and make sure the sixteenths on the bar are readable. A beech gauge with a boxwood thumbscrew is Stanley's cheaper No. 61 or 62, and an ungraduated boxwood one is a No. 265.

Sweetheart per the title. It says mortise, but a No. 65 is a single-pin marking gauge.
