Goodell-Pratt · No. 220 · catalogs 1907–1930
Goodell-Pratt of Greenfield, Massachusetts, titled its catalogs Toolsmiths and sold about 1,500 tools at its peak, but no wooden panel gauge turns up in them. Its marking gauges were metal roller gauges, listed from at least 1907 to 1930. Each has round, graduated steel beams with a roller marker and a knurled thumbscrew for each beam, everything polished and nickel plated. The No. 220 has a single 8-inch beam, the No. 221 adds a 4-inch beam, and the No. 222 carries three beams of 3, 4 and 8 inches, so you can hold three settings at once. The company also sold circular or oval gauges for marking curves, Nos. 225 and 226. Millers Falls took Goodell-Pratt over in 1931 and kept the brand on some tools until 1948.
Identify and date it
Count the beams to tell the 220, 221 and 222 apart. Round steel beams with roller markers separate it from Stanley's oval wooden gauges. The Goodell-Pratt circular or oval gauges, Nos. 225 and 226, use the same 8-inch beam with a different head for marking curves.
Multi-beam gauges lose beams over the years, and the small roller markers can be missing or seized. Worn plating is cosmetic.
Buying guide
Only four Goodell-Pratt roller gauges are listed, so the $55–170 delivered band isn't a market read, and most of eBay's Goodell Pratt gauge results are speed indicators and other gauges you can skip. For a user, the double gauge at about $24 delivered is the buy, since the other two double gauges ask $66 and $143 delivered. Count the beams against the model, one on the No. 220, an 8 and a 4-inch on the 221 and three on the 222, and look for a roller marker and knurled thumbscrew on each beam, since those small parts go missing, while worn plating is only cosmetic. The collector buy is the No. 222 titled unused in its original box at $224.50 with free shipping, the only three-beam gauge listed.
