Pfeil · No. 7 (e.g. 7/14) · about 1942–present
Pfeil started in 1902 as a knife and cutting-tool shop in Langenthal, Switzerland, where it still is, and made its first carving tools around 1942. Carvers know it by the Swiss Made name, the pfeil logo printed on every tool and a numbering system that gives the profile first and the width in millimetres second, so a 7/14 is a No. 7 sweep 14 mm wide. On Pfeil's scale a 1 is flat and the curve deepens all the way to the U-shaped 11, which puts the No. 7 toward the deep end. Letters mark the variations, a for spoon, L for long bent and F for fishtail. Pfeil's numbers run slightly out of step with the Sheffield list, since it calls its skew 1S and starts its gouges at 2, so check the profile if you mix brands. Standard tools are about 10 inches long, with octagonal ash handles.
Identify and date it
Read the number on the shank. 7/14 means sweep 7, 14 mm wide, and a letter after the 7 marks a spoon (a), long-bent (L) or fishtail (F) version. We found no evidence that Pfeil tools made before 2000 are better than later ones, and the company has made them in the same town since it began, so buy on condition rather than age.
If you’ll use it
Pfeil ships its tools sharpened and ready to use, so a used one in good order should need only honing.
Dropped carving tools chip at the corners and tip, which is why Pfeil tells owners to keep them in rolls or racks. Look for rust on the blade and handles that are split or swapped.
Buying guide
Only about 8 used Pfeil No. 7s are listed, most at $40–60 delivered, and new ones ask $40–53 from a US retailer, so a used one is only a buy at the low end, around $41–45. Pick by size and condition rather than age, since we found nothing showing older Pfeil tools are better, and Pfeil has made them in the same town since it started. Read the number on the shank in the photos, where 7/14 means sweep 7 at 14 mm and a letter after the 7 marks a long-bent (L) or fishtail (F) version, then zoom in on both corners for chips and check the ash handle for splits. Founder's Grade and Extra Clean are one dealer's own grading words, so judge those from the photos too.
