Buck Bros. · Firmer gouge, beveled outside
An out-cannel gouge has its bevel on the outside of the curve. The in-cannel kind is beveled inside, and Marples' 1984 catalog sums up both as firmer gouges for cutting grooves and hollows and paring irregular ends to fit together. Buck Brothers made both at the Riverlin Works in Millbury, Massachusetts. Their 1913 list offers cast-steel firmer gouges beveled outside, socket gouges supplied beveled outside only, and Extra Socket Firmer Gouges, No. 40, with a 6-inch blade on the 1-inch size. The catalog charged more for inside-beveled gouges, saying they took more labor and were usually wanted for finer work. Its long paring gouges came beveled inside unless you asked, in regular, middle and flat sweeps. So most outside-beveled Buck gouges are working joiner's and patternmaker's tools rather than carving tools.
Identify and date it
Look at the edge in the photos. On an out-cannel gouge the bevel is on the convex outside and the hollow inside runs straight to the edge, while an in-cannel is the reverse. Buck stamped BUCK BROS, with the buck's head on many tools from 1875, and the socket versions have a cone where the handle fits.
Outside bevels get rounded over by careless honing, and the corners chip. Socket gouges often have split or replaced handles, and tang ones work loose.
Buying guide
Buy a gouge titled out-cannel, and two here ask about $27 delivered, near the bottom of the $25–50 band where most of the 39 or so listed sit. Only 3 of the 21 titles we read say which side the bevel is on, so check the edge in the photos for a bevel on the outside of the curve, and take extra care with long gouges, because Buck's long paring gouges came beveled inside unless the buyer asked. Read BUCK BROS or the buck's head on the blade, zoom in on both corners for chips, and ask whether the handle is tight in the socket or on the tang. Skip the $108 outside-bevel gouge unless you need its 1-7/8-inch width, the only reason we can see for more than twice the typical ask.

The lowest delivered Buck gouge here at about $24, a small 3/16-inch tang gouge. The title doesn't say which side the bevel is on, so check the edge in the photos before you buy it as an out-cannel.
