Disston · D-8 · late 1870s–1955, sold on under H. K. Porter into the 1970s
The D-8 started as the No. 80 "Choice" of 1874, the first saw built on Henry Disston's patented skewback, the curved back that trims away steel the cut doesn't need. Disston soon gave it a new handle, let into a curved cutout in the blade so your hand sits closer to the work, and renamed it D-8, the first Disston saw with a D in its name. It's in the 1879 catalog. Disston billed it as "the saw most carpenters use" and made it from 16 to 30 inches long, with crosscut or rip teeth. Rip saws 26 inches and longer could have the thumbhole handle for two-handed ripping, from about 1880 until about 1950. Handles were apple until about 1945, then beech, birch and other hardwoods, and the D-8 was still in H. K. Porter's catalog in 1972.
Identify and date it
The D-8 is the skewback, close-handle saw of the Disston line. The D-23 is a narrower straight-back saw, and the No. 7 and No. 12 have the older set-back handle. Before 1928 the etch puts the 8 inside a large letter D, and from 1928 it reads D-8 with a hyphen. A full-size D-8 has five brass screws and a panel saw four, and an applewood handle means it was made before about 1945.
If you’ll use it
Pete Taran calls the D-8 a fine saw that's very common on the old tools market, so you can afford to be picky about the plate. Disston's most popular filings were 8 points for crosscut and 5½ for rip.
If you’ll collect it
The thumbhole rip saws are the D-8s collectors want, and the Disstonian Institute says every collector seems to have one. Pre-1928 saws with the 8 inside the D on the etch are the older ones.
Most old D-8s need sharpening and setting, and many have rust, pitting along the teeth or a kink in the plate. A gradual bend can be worked out, but a sharp crease can't. Handles lose chips off the horns, crack, or get swapped from another saw, and decades of filing can leave a blade that narrows almost to a point at the toe.
Buying guide
A plain 26-inch D-8 to use asks $32–90 delivered, and with about 111 listed, most at $50–130 delivered, you can afford to be picky about the plate. Ask for a photo sighting down the blade, since a gradual bend can be worked out and a sharp kink can't, and check that the toe isn't filed narrow and all five screws are there. Shipping runs from free to $120 on a $30 saw, so compare delivered prices. Collectors want the thumbhole rips, and all four here carry a warning, so we'd take the saw titled circa 1896-1917 at $91 delivered and check its etch for the 8 inside the D. Skip the $50 and $199 thumbhole listings, which share one title across two sellers.
