VINTAGE DISSTON HAND SAW D-23, 8 point 26” Blade
Disston · D-23 · 1911–1955 (lesser H. K. Porter versions to the early 1990s)
Disston brought out the D-20 series in 1911, a middle line with carved apple handles and polished blades. There were four saws, and the D-23 was the narrow, straight-back one, 6¼ inches wide at the butt and 1¾ at the toe on a 26-inch blade. Its siblings were gone by about 1931, but the D-23 sold on until the family sold the company in 1955, and a lesser H. K. Porter version carried the name into the early 1990s. Disston called it one of its first Lightweight saws in 1927 and, in 1932, the largest-selling lightweight straight-back saw. It came with crosscut or rip teeth, mostly in 20 to 26 inches. The 1928 redesign gave it a bigger hand hole and a cover-top handle, and around 1945 applewood gave way to birch and other hardwoods. The Disstonian Institute says a pre-1955 D-23 beats any handsaw sold since.

Identify and date it
The D-23 is the straight-back twin of the skewback D-20, and its blade is narrower than a D-8's. Pre-1928 etches put the 23 inside a large letter D, and later ones read D-23. Pre-1928 handles have a small notch on top, while later ones have a cover-top and a smooth dip for the second hand. Even full-size D-23s carry the smaller 13/16-inch medallion used on back saws and panel saws.
If you’ll use it
The Disstonian Institute calls the D-23 an excellent choice for a saw to use. Many were made after power saws took over, so they've often been sharpened only once or twice, and the thicker handles seldom have broken horns.
If you’ll collect it
The Institute doesn't count the D-20 series among the most collectable Disstons. If you want an older one, look for the pre-1928 etch with 23 inside the D.
Rust, pitting and dull teeth are the usual problems, and a sharp kink in the plate can't be fixed. Saws filed for decades get narrow at the toe, sometimes to less than a third of an inch. Post-war handles vary a lot in wood and finish.
Buying guide
For a saw to use, take the D-23 titled never used at $38 delivered, well under the $50–90 band where most of the about 159 listed sit. The Disstonian Institute calls the D-23 an excellent saw to use, often sharpened only once or twice, so ask for a photo sighting down the blade, check that the teeth are even, and pass on any with a toe filed to a sliver. Shipping runs from free to $88 on a $25 saw, so compare delivered prices. Collectors want the pre-1928 etch with the 23 inside the D and an applewood handle, which the saw titled 1911-1917 should show at $76 delivered.
