Stanley · No. 7 · 1869–1970
The No. 7 is the standard jointer, 22 inches long with a 2⅜-inch iron and a little over 8 pounds. Stanley made it from 1869 to 1970, with a corrugated 7C from 1898 to 1964. A jointer trues an edge straight or a face flat, and its length does the work, riding over the low spots and taking down the high ones. Patrick Leach puts it with the No. 4 and No. 5 in most hand-tool kits, and Popular Woodworking's basic kit pairs it with a No. 4 smoother. Leach also pushes back on the idea that the sole must be perfectly flat. He's never seen one that is, and the old-timers made their living with them anyway. Christopher Schwarz is warier. He finds a jointer's sole too much iron to flatten by hand and wants one that's reasonably flat and actually works.
Identify and date it
It's 4 inches longer than a No. 6 with the same 2⅜-inch iron, and 2 inches shorter than the No. 8, which takes a wider 2⅝-inch iron. The size number is cast behind the tote on the bigger planes. Stanley's Bed Rock version is the No. 607.
Type Study sweet spot
Types 10–16 (about 1907–1941) have the features most users want.
Date it like a No. 4 by the patent dates behind the frog, the knob height and raised ring, and the lever cap hole. On the bigger planes the number is cast behind the tote at the heel, so check there in the photos. Blue paint means Type 20, 1962 or later.
If you’ll use it
If you flatten boards by hand, this is the medium tool between a fore plane and a smoother. Schwarz sets his for a shaving about .006 inch thick.
Check the whole length for cracks at the cheeks and mouth, and for twist along the body. Broken tote horns, pitting and replaced totes are common.
Buying guide
A No. 7 weighs a little over 8 pounds, and shipping here runs up to $140, enough to move a plane from mid-pack to the top, so compare delivered prices. About 70 are listed, and most complete ones ask $130–210 delivered, with plain user planes starting near $98. Early Types don't cost much more than later ones here, which is why the prelateral Type 4 at about $163 is our collector pick. Ask whether it rocks on a flat surface, zoom in on both cheeks and the mouth for cracks or welds, and ask for packing that protects the tote horn and the mouth. Skip the $200 plane with $140 of shipping.

The lowest total on a complete No. 7 at about $98 delivered, more than $30 under the band. The title is just the model name, so ask for photos of the cheeks and mouth and whether it rocks on a flat surface.
