Stanley 3/4" Chisel No. 750
Stanley · 750 · 1930–1969 (Sweetheart logo until about 1935)
Stanley's 700-series socket chisels came out around 1930 in three lengths, the 720 firmer with a 6-inch blade, the 740 pocket chisel with 4½ inches and the 750 butt chisel with 3¼. The 750 lasted until 1969 and sold best, so it's the one you'll find. In Stanley's 1953 catalog the blade and socket are forged in one piece, with no welded socket, the handle is straight-grained hickory with a brown finish, and three leather washers are cemented together on top. The earliest 750s carry the Sweetheart logo, the heart with S.W. inside that Stanley used until about 1935. Lie-Nielsen based its bevel-edge socket chisels on the 750, and in 2010 Stanley reissued it as the Sweetheart socket chisel, made in Sheffield, England.

Identify and date it
The number 750 is stamped on the socket between STANLEY and MADE IN U.S.A. A 3¼-inch blade makes it a 750, while a 6-inch blade is a 720 and 4½ inches a 740. Later Stanley socket chisels marked only STANLEY and MADE IN USA look much the same, and so does the 2010 Sweetheart reissue, so ask when it was made if the socket doesn't say 750.
If you’ll use it
Several Sawmill Creek users say the unnumbered STANLEY MADE IN USA socket chisels are the same chisel without the number, and they tend to sell for less.
If you’ll collect it
Collectors want the Sweetheart logo, which puts a 750 in its first five years or so.
Handles go missing and get replaced, and a socket hammered without a handle mushrooms at the top. Rust and pitting on the back near the edge are common on chisels that lived in damp toolboxes.
Buying guide
For a 750 to use, a single chisel asks $32–42 delivered at the low end, and the 31 or so listed mostly ask $65–170 delivered, a band that mixes singles and sets. Sets of three ask $97–165 delivered and eight-piece sets $233–567, so work out the price per chisel against the singles. Read the socket stamp for STANLEY, 750 and MADE IN U.S.A., ask for the blade length, since about 3¼ inches makes it a 750, and check the socket rim isn't mushroomed from being hammered without a handle. Collectors want the Sweetheart heart, which puts a 750 in its first five years or so, and a 1930s Sweetheart single asks $105 delivered here. Pass on the six-piece set with a pouch at $621 delivered, about $100 a chisel.
